Family History (Part XXXVII)

My family’s always been addicted to tobacco.

Must be a lot of savage in me,
get myself hurt sometimes —
learning I’m doing
something
I hadn’t ought to be.

Like, breathing fire,
sucking smoke into my bowels.

Leave off those lungs, Boy!
And while you’re at it,
cut the air some slack.
You ain’t immune
From breathing it, Jack.

It is, after all, a particularly disgusting habit.

I can imagine an infamous ancestor
Partaking the outrageous new fad
Of the seventeenth century.

I wonder what I did before that.
